GrandCare Systems and Knute-Nelson were recently featured on Lakes Area News. Anchor Chelsea Nelson explored how technology is changing the way we take care of our seniors, often in the comfort of their own homes.

Knute-Nelson Home Care provides personalized health care to individuals in their own home. Services are tailored to meet the needs of each individual and are provided on a one-to-one basis. They use GrandCare in both home care and hospice.

GrandCare starts with a central touchscreen hub that acts as a source of information, communication, video chat and medication reminders. A series of telehealth and activity of daily living monitoring devices report wirelessly to designated care partners. GrandCare can be an opportunity for new revenues, a way to extend staff through virtual care services, and a method to reach more clients at once (a dashboard view allows an omniscient view of several clients at once). Most baby boomers remember watching the animated show The Jetsons wondering if we were getting a glimpse of our future.

Well, we haven’t quite made the transition to flying cars (but driverless cars are hitting the road), and we don’t have talking robot maids (but we do have Rombas that vacuum on their own), but our society is full of technology that I am sure the creators of the show never imagined.

We have smartphones that can answer all our questions, and laptops thinner than most children’s books. As technology continues to advance, boomers are working to keep up with all the changes, and many companies are taking note and catering to our tech vitality…

Boomer: What technology is available for boomers that live alone and need to reach help in an emergency?

Abramson:  New and improved technologies emphasize wellness, mobility, autonomy and social connectivity.   These innovative products and services are promoting health and independence for aging baby boomers.  Here are a few of my favorite examples of new technology in the fall prevention and emergency monitoring space:

ActiveCare Personal Assistant Link: This one-touch system looks like a small cell phone with large buttons. With the push of a button boomers are connected to ActiveCare’s call center with specialists that can help with everything from calling an ambulance to calling a physician or family members. GPS is integral to the PAL system, allowing users’ locations to be tracked at all times, and can detect if an individual has fallen.

 eNeighbor Monitoring System: This system is programmed to detect unusual activity in the home. A shower left running or a fridge that goes unopened for a day could trigger a phone call to the end user or a caregiver.    

GrandCare: This system offers a comprehensive communication and monitoring system  for active seniors combining aspects of home automation, online communications and healthcare (telehealth) in one flexible and user-friendly package.

BeClose: The device tracks your loved one’s daily routine by receiving information from discreet wireless sensors that are placed in various locations around the home (as well as a wearable alert button).  Caregivers have the freedom of knowing their aging loved one is safe because they are able to check on them at any time using a secure, private web page.  If there are any disruptions to daily life, the primary caregiver will be alerted immediately by phone, email or text message…

If there is anyone who has a broad understanding of how companies are using technology to help improve the lives of seniors, it is Peter Radsliff.

Radsliff leads a nonprofit consortium of nearly 70 businesses that work in fields related to aging and technology, called the Aging Technology Alliance or AgeTek. I spoke with him about trends in the industry for a story in this week’s Business Journal.

The organization was founded in 2009, in an organic fashion. Radsliff said it all started when he spoke at a conference on technology and aging, and the CEO of GrandCare Systems [Charlie Hillman], a company in the space, was in the audience. The company got in touch with Radsliff and asked him to speak as part of a webinar [What is now the Aging and Technology Webinar]. But the day of the webinar, Radsliff finished his talk early. Left without a specific subject to speak about, he started reflecting on how hard business was during the recession.

“I just threw it out there, I said, ‘Would anybody be interested in doing any co-marketing, or sharing of best practices, or any other kind of back-scratching activity to help each other as small business people?'” he said. “The outpouring from them was phenomenal. It kind of set me aback actually.” Of course, then he also ended up running the organization.

“I realized, ‘Great, I now have another full-time job on top of my day job,” said Radsliff jokingly, who is also CEO of Los Altos-based Presto. The company makes a system that automatically prints out emails for seniors or others who don’t have a computers.

Radsliff said AgeTek aims to “look after the business needs of its members.” “We each try to help each other to do what the company needs,” he said. “That can be anywhere from facilitated access to other companies, it could just be just making relationships and finding synergies.”

We stay on the lookout for technology that improves the lives of both seniors and their families as a key part of our mission at Senior Care Corner.  When we encountered GrandCare Systems at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show, we knew this was a solution about which we wanted to learn more.  In this episode of our podcast we learn together.

We are pleased to welcome Laura Mitchell, GrandCare’s Vice President of Marketing, to join us for a chat at Senior Care Corner.  Laura told us about the personal story behind the founding of the company and GrandCare Systems’ technology and how it helps seniors to stay safe and healthy at home while bringing them closer to their families.

We found it particularly interesting that some have used the GrandCare solution to increase the independence of senior loved ones by linking them via internet to distant family members and other caregivers, which allows at least some to transition from full time to part time in-home care.

A virtual experience for seniors, family and caregivers that combines monitoring and communication in one system, the GrandCare System helps aging in place seniors remain independent and safe at home. No computer skills are needed to operate the easy to use senior home care solution that features an interactive touch screen. Designated caregivers and family can log into the GrandCare website and access sensor graphs, vitals and set up parameters/rules to receive alerts if specific events occur such as medications are not taken, a door is opened at odd times, a refrigerator is not accessed at meal time or an individual did not get out of bed.

As needs continually change, the system monitors the activities of daily living such as waking up, entry and exit from home, eating, sleeping and general movement around the residence. It also uses reminders and cognitive assists when needed to help seniors with medication management. The telehealth feature remotely manages chronic health conditions by tracking blood pressure, weight, pulse and glucose.

For further safety, the Smart Home Automation helps control aspects of the home that promote senior safety. The system controls the home’s temperature, automates lighting and monitors appliances such as the stove being left on.

Seniors will have the ability to socialize and keep in touch with their family using the two-way Web conferencing feature. The virtual visits also allow conferencing with the caregiver, family or doctor all on a monitor in the loved one’s home. Users also can view family videos and pictures, read emails, listen to voicemails and check a calendar for important dates and reminders.

In addition to the socialization, seniors can remain sharp with access to weather updates; news; videos; and entertainment such as games, trivia and spiritual offerings that encourage mental activity and brain fitness.
